Jesus Fucking Christ

A thread about fetuses (surprisingly enough, not abortion-related) got fairly wanky on FFA, and a nonny added something to the discussion that actually made my jaw drop.

omg

How can you say, even in jest (and apparently she's not joking), that a medical professional should be more willing to sterilize you because you're black? I'm all for people getting sterilized if that's what they want, but to sincerely believe that an OBGYN should look at you and see, not a patient, but a black person, and that they should be eager to sterilize you because of that, is beyond disturbing. I'm not exactly a SJW, god knows I'm not, but y'all are aware that ethnic minorities and other "undesirables" have a long history of being forcibly sterilized or having their children taken by the states in which they live, right? And to imply that you expect that sort of treatment is... jesus fucking christ.

The pic's too small for me to read, but... wow. ICK. Like, not to break Godwin's Law here, but... forcible sterilisation of black people does kind of instantly bring to mind the Holocaust. Wow, anon.

Er, not that I'm calling anon a Nazi or whatever. Just agreeing that that sounds like the worst sort of liberal racism (we will help you not make babies since that is what you want! it's stupid for those poor black people to make babies!) and also has THE WORST ASSOCIATIONS EVER.

Sorry about that, I increased the size so hopefully it will be more readable. What I think disturbs me so much is the sort of flippant tone of the comment -- like, its not even a concern to nonnie that such horrible things have been done to certain groups, but that those horrible things aren't working to nonnie's benefit, right here and now.

And while I don't doubt that some medical professionals are biased against blacks, to expect them to be and to be annoyed when that doesn't work in your favor... jesus fucking christ.

Somewhat on topic, I've wondered before why doctors are so reluctant to sterilize women -- the consensus seems to be, whatever the race of the woman, the doctor will try to get out of it whenever possible. I wonder if they're terrified of having the bejaysus sued out of them a few years down the line when a patient changes her mind and gets pissed that she got herself sterilized young. Guys seem to have an easier time of it, if only because most of the male sterilization procedures are not that complicated to reverse. But if you're a woman and you get all the plumbing ripped out, you're kinda fucked if you change your mind down the road and decide babiesbabiesbabies.

Hmm. Well, looking at that, I think it's actually a joke specifically ABOUT that history rather than ignoring it?

I will joke about some dark stuff but that's crossing the line to me. That's like making a Jews in ashtrays joke or something. Ick. Also, the nonnie replied and said she wasn't joking at all.

I suspect maybe she was being cynical/making the kind of joke you do when you're pretending it's ironally funny as an alternative to just getting angry? There's this terrible history of forced sterilization of poor/disabled/black women in the US, and yet now she's asking for safe/effective birth control and doctors won't give it to her.

(Doctors are oddly reluctant to do permenant birth control for women - when my mother asked for one in the 80s, after her second high-risk pregnancy and emergency C-section, the surgeon tried repeatedly to convince her that she she should wait because she was "still so young" and "might want more children," despite the fact that she already had two kids)

As I said, I will joke about some dark stuff but to make a joke like that is crossing a line, in my opinion.

(I'd love to know if there was some particular reason doctors are reluctant to sterilize women who wish to be sterilized, or if it's just a mentality that is very, very widespread.)
