I think it's one of the more extreme examples of 'Write What You Know'. So many fans start out as teenagers with either limited life experience or limited imagination. This is not to denigrate all teens -- I was a teen myself when I got involved with fandom, and I've met teen writers who could blow the socks off writers with decades more experience. I'd also like to remind everyone that Mary Shelley was only 19 when she wrote "Frankenstein".
But High School AUs are funny things, because in most cases you have to strip everything out of the story and characters that made the fandom interesting in the first place to get them to fit. There's far more interesting Elseworlds/What if stories you can write that don't completely rape the source material.
