Captain America!
Jul. 23rd, 2011 02:58 amSo I saw Captain America today and I am all a-squee!
Short, no-spoilers version: They did Steve justice. The movie is at least as good as Thor and Iron Man.
Plus, they crammed a LOT into this movie. It was a very ambitious effort, and they succeed on almost every point.
First of all, where I think the film really WORKS is in how humble Steve is -- Evans plays him without any arrogance or rogueishness, and we see why Erskine would chose this "90-lb weakling" for his incredible experiment. Steve is a good man.
And YES, there is a scene where we see artist!Steve sketching in his books!
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter -- wowza! I absolutely understand why Steve was sick in the head for her. Also, I like how she doesn't throw herself into Steve's arms once he gets his beefcake body, but instead there's a couple scenes with them early on where we see Peggy and weakling!Steve bonding, and it's clear that she respects and cares for him as a PERSON, not as a body.
Steve kept her photo inside his compass -- she's his lodestone -- so romantic!!
Sebastian Stan as Bucky is so gorgeous I was unable to think straight whenever he was onscreen. The scene where Steve saves him is so beautiful (and what the hell DID Arnim Zola do to him? *is creeped out*).
Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark appropriately channeled Howard Hughes, and looked dashing in his 1940s clothes. Also, he legitimately looks like he could be Robert Downey Jr.'s father, they look so much alike. I picked up some slashy Howard > Steve vibes, not so much on Steve's part, but the ending where Howard is like "I WILL FIND YOU STEVE" while his eyes glisten is just pure slash fuel.
As I was watching Arnim Zola, I thought to myself, Wow, they're really going for a Truman Capote thing with him, and then as the credits rolled, I saw Zola was played by Toby Jones, who was also Truman Capote in Infamous! No wonder my brain went there!
Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is really intimidating, and everyone who interacts with him who ISN'T Steve (or briefly, Bucky) looks like they're about to piss their pants in terror. His German accent is beautiful. The only complaint I have is I wish we'd gotten a Red Skull origin flashback.
And yes, the HYDRAcar is gorgeous.
The big fight scene between Red Skull and Cap is outstanding -- nice work on the angles! They were a little bit Vader and Luke Skywalker there, too, as Red Skull is doing his whole "We are gods! Join me and we shall rulethe galaxy as father and son the world together!"
And finally --- AHHHHH! JIM HAMMOND. JIM HAMMOND, or his prototype, appears at the 1942 Stark Expo! Jim exists in the Marvel Movieverse! AHHHHHHHH!

Date: 2011-08-02 06:10 pm (UTC)When I saw that I actaully tapped the guy who I went to see it with and went "look! look! Human Torch!!" and he just gave me The Look.
I very much enjoyed this film, for me it's between Thor and Iron Man (where IM is the best of those films) and I can't wait to see them all together on the screen.
I admit, one thing I didn't like though, was Bucky, he seemed quite pointless.
