Dates of conception of the Eaglets
Aug. 9th, 2006 12:59 amOdd little mini-project here. Working from Court, Household, and Itinerary of King Henry II (Robert Eyton) and Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady (Bonnie Wheeler & John Carmi Parsons), I'm attempting to date where and when, approximately, the children of Eleanor and Henry II were conceived.
William was born August 1153 (Chronicæ Sancti Albini:1153 XVI Kal Sep...Guillelmus…filius Henrici ducis). This would place his conception around December 1152. I do not know Henry or Eleanor's whereabouts during that time.
Henry was born February 1155 in London (Chronicæ Sancti Albini:1155 II Kal Mar…Londoniæ...Hainricus, regis Hainrici filius). This would place his conception around June 1154. At Easter of that year, Eleanor left Poitiers to join Henry in Normandy, and was with him in December when he went to be crowned in England. Presumably she was with him in the earlier months of the year as well.
Matilda was born June 1156 in London. This would date her conception around October of 1155. Henry II was in England around Michaelmas of that year, visiting Cricklade, Woodstock, Newbury, and Windsor. I'm not sure where Eleanor was during this period, but a charter is granted to her Dapifer at Newbury, so I'm thinking she may have been present there.
Richard was born September 8, 1157 at Oxford. This would date his conception to earlier that same year, probably in January. Henry II was in Normandy during the early months of 1157, charter evidence puts him in Caen, Rouen, and Falaise. Eleanor was with him until February, after Louis publically recognized Henry as Count of Anjou and Seneschal of France. Eleanor left Normandy with the children (and Richard in utero), landed in Southampton, and went on to London.
Geoffrey was born September 23, 1158 in England (Robert de Torigny: 1158 IX Kal Oct..filius Henrico regi Anglorum…Gaufredus). This would place his conception to January or February 1158. Henry II was in England during the early months of 1158, heading south from Northumberland to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, York, Nottingham, Woodstock, Hampshire, Salisbury, before arriving in Worcester to be crowned on Easter Day. Eleanor must've joined him at some point as Hoveden says she was crowned with him at Easter.
Eleanor was born September 1161 in Domfront in Normandy. This would place her conception around January of that year. Henry and Eleanor spent Christmas together at Le Mans, and then Henry is active during January around Rouen and is in Caen in February.
Joan was born in October 1165, in Angers in Anjou (Robert de Torigny: 1165…mense Octobris...filiam Johanna). This would place her conception around February or March 1165. She was probably conceived sometime around Lent, when Henry II crossed the Channel to Normandy. Eleanor and the royal children were in Winchester, the Isle of Wight, and Dover during this period. Henry was in Hampshire and Dover prior to Easter. They met again in May in Normandy, and Henry took her to Anjou.
John was born around Christmas 1166 at Oxford. This would place his conception in April of that year. In March, Henry joined Eleanor at Angers, where they held Easter court. Eleanor was probably still resident in Angers for Michaelmas 1166, along with Richard, Matilda, Geoffrey, Eleanor, and Joan.
Worth Noting
-- Henry and Eleanor were doing it ALL THE TIME.
-- Eleanor would've been about seven months pregnant with Young Henry when crowned Queen at Westminster.
-- Richard was conceived in Normandy. Perhaps that's why Richard's name was chosen for his ancestral dukes of Normandy instead of some closer ancestor.
-- Eleanor was about four months pregnant with Geoffrey when crowned Queen at Worcester.
-- Eleanor left Henry's court in Normandy in October/November 1166, crossed the Channel while seven or eight months pregnant, and gave birth to John at Oxford.
