Is Batista (Drax) the first Asian-American action hero in a major Hollywood blockbuster who is not also a martial artist? I can think of Asian martial arts heroes, and Asian protagonists who are not action heroes, but I can't think of another non-martial artist Asian action hero in a big Hollywood movie. (Batista is, in case you didn't know, half-Filipino, half-Greek.)

At the beginning of the movie, we see that Peter's mom Meredith is dying of cancer. Later on we also learn that Peter himself ishalf-alien on his father's side. Depressing thought: Is this what caused Mama Quill's fate? Who knows how much radiation an ancient celestial being emits. And carrying a half-alien fetus inside her body for nine months could have jumpstarted her cancer, as well. :(

Ancient celestial being? Like that gigantic space skull that mining colony was on? Peter's father was one of those things?

Not comics Peter -- in the comics his space dad is J'son, emperor of an alien race called the Spartax. However, J'son is your typical humanoid alien, and could hardly be described as an ancient celestial being, which is what the Nova Corps call Peter's dad when they tell him about detecting those odd energy patterns in his nervous system. This leads me to think that Peter's dad is going to either be someone other than J'son in the movieverse, or J'son is supposed to be quite different from his comics counterpart.

Good catch! Yul Brynner was part Buryat and arguably a major Hollywood action star.

Aw, the Meredith thought is really sad but certainly possible. As with Dawn in Buffy, whose mother's death is strongly implied to be caused by her mystical properties.

Maybe not an action hero per se, but Sulu as a (western-style) fencer?

That's another good one. I was about to say 'Hollywood action hero' but then I remembered Sulu was in the Star Trek movies, as well. I also thought of Brandon Lee (dearly departed actor of The Crow). It's kinda sad that it's been so many decades and we can pretty much count the examples on our hands.
