So on my recent trip down south, I was in Jackson, MS and I drove past a building that was so huge I at first thought it was a hospital, only to see it was, in fact, a Baptist church. I mentioned this to Mama, who said, "you useta go to that church when you was a little girl, dontcha remember?"

What! I had no memory of this, but Mama's old boss Mr. Terry used to take me to that church every Sunday when I was wee to get my Christ on. He later fired Mama for dating a black man. I was surprised to hear this. Although my family is historically Methodist, Mama might be described as a general Christian (and if we're being honest, not too good of one) and her father may have been an atheist, although I very much doubt he knew what that word meant. I don't think I was ever baptized. Mama wouldn't have cared; grandma would've, but she was wrecked by strokes by the time I was born. I was much too young when Mr. Terry took me to the mega-giganto-ultrazord church (Baptists don't approve of child baptism).

I find it totally bizarre and hilarious to think I was once a widdle Baptist!

I find it deeply weird that I have very distant US cousins, via my great-x-3-grandmother's half-sister Jemima, who are Baptist missionaries...
