I walked out of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. That movie is disgusting. I hadn't read the book, and was expecting an espionage thriller of some kind. When I saw Lisbeth, I thought, Oh cool, she's different and interesting, I want to see her being awesome and kicking ass. Instead, half the movie is her being repeatedly and graphically raped. I was about to puke after the second rape, and that's when I stormed out.

I loved the Hellraiser movies, and I think The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a filthy, disgusting movie.

*SPOILER BELOW*

After the second rape there is a revenge scene that apparently is just as graphic (I read the book). However, in my opinion none of those scenes are justified. When I first read the book, it felt like more a revenge fantasy than an actual plot... and I don't think that even Fincher can improve it much (the central mystery, btw, is so predictable). I read an article on the author much later, and it turns out he witnessed a gang rape when he was a teen, and was haunted all his life for not helping the girl. Apparently this ended up as a way of him exorcising that... but honestly, I think he should have gone to therapy instead.

Lisbeth gets a happy ending of sorts in this book and in the end of the trilogy too, but of course first the author puts her through a few more rounds of hell. On the whole, I find the books border exploitaition at times... Lisbeth is a strong character, but she's a sketch of a character who could have been exceptional in the hands of a better author.

This is a random side note, but the author died before releasing the next seven installments, as there were supposed to be ten. I thought it was an odd place to leave Lisbeth and found that out after watching some documentary footage from the original Swedish films. His companion was supposed to finish the fourth novel. It was halfway done when the author died but there have been uproars that it wouldn't be handled properly, so she's refused.

It honestly just pisses me off. I think Larsson would've developed Lisbeth beautifully in the end.
