An updated collection of tweets and quotes from my favoritist sex-and-food-obsessed porn star, James Deen. I think he's hilarious and plus, he refuses to do porn scenes that he finds too "rapey". What's not to love? Uh, I guess this should go without saying, but as he's a porn star, his website and Twitter are in no way safe for work. Head's up, y'all.

James asks the important questions.

if porn was so bad then why would there be so many nuns and school girls in it????

I was so angry then the woman at quiznos gave me a free soda and a hug. Have you hugged your porn star today?

Can you order pizza to where you are sitting in traffic.

Why the fuck do triscuits get my dick hard

He models the importance of regular medical checkups.

My doctor told me that sex doesn't count as working out.... I don't think my doctor knows how to properly have sex

I feel ya Jimmy, I feel ya.

I am watching 300 on tv... when are these dudes gonna start banging eachother???? WORST GAY PORN EVER!!!!!

He enjoys good, clean fun!

I want to get some bottles and go break them in a parking lot...then politely sweep up my mess and dispose of it correctly

James supports safe sex.

If you can get a damn chimpanzee to fuck you then you can convince the thing to wear a condom

As a bonus, I discovered this list of common triggers while making a list of everything I will warn for in my fanfics. This list, from the Kyriarchy and Priviledge 101 blog, includes such things as "snakes", "insects", and "slimy things" alongside common triggers such as suicide and rape. I have to say, I think it's sad how the word 'trigger' has become synonymous with squick.

"Swearing"? The words "stupid and "dumb" are listed as examples of slurs. I think these three items alone cover more than half of my journal.

What exactly was "trigger" supposed to mean before it got so watered down, anyway? From the context, I had assumed the idea was that certain topics would invoke traumatic memories for rape victims. Am I way off? Because even if I'm right, I don't fully understand that.

Yeah, basically a trigger is something that might cause people to have PTSD-esque flashbacks, or prompt self-destructive behavior. Some people who are recovering from anorexia, for example, really do not need to be reading fics about eating disorders.

I am not at all opposed to warning for obviously traumatic things, like rape or self-harm. But it's gotten to the point where people are trying to get their squicks added to the list of triggers, which really makes a mockery of what triggers are all about. Note to fandom: just because it doesn't turn you on, doesn't make it triggering.

Hell just because it upsets you, doesn't make it triggering, and it's not always the same as a phobic reaction either, though it can be.

Agreed. For my part, the trouble I have with it is that it puts the onus on the writer to anticipate the psychological makeup of the audience. I can understand why a story about rape would be problematic for a lot of people, but the aftereffects of a trauma are more complicated than that. I've read Funky Winkerbean comics where a veteran gets nervous in crowded areas, so he does all his grocery shopping in the middle of the night. It isn't as simple as removing him from the war and things related to the war; the war's in his head, so everything reminds him of it. I'm guessing rape trauma works the same way. If there was a red car nearby when it happened, then a red car might be a trigger. It doesn't have to make sense.

It's impossible, then, for any writer to be able to anticipate every possible element in a story that might bring back a bad memory. The list just smacks of well-intentioned censorship to me, like the parental advisory explicit content sticker they put on music. It's like putting a label on your fic that says "This may contain words or concepts that might offend or traumatize some people, so you'd better not read it just in case". It creates more problems than it solves.

That's a really interesting point of view. I've run into this problem before, and felt a bit affronted when one of my followers asked me to put a trigger warning for a drawing depicting extremely consensual fictional incest, because incest was a big trigger for them. It made me realize that I had been more than a little insensitive to topics that people might be upset by, but it also continues to make me scratch my head - especially since I had posted very similar subject matter on my journal before and not heard a peep from this person. I ended up putting a general warning on my journal with the hope that would be enough, because no, I don't want to end up having to start stamping a big red "CONTAINS SNAKES" on my entries.

Exactly. The thing is, what if snakes are a critical plot twist you don't want to give away? You can either provide a warning at the top and spoil the whole thing, or risk triggering Indiana Jones when he reads your story. Past a point, it stops being about art, and it starts being about creating an elaborate bubble to protect Indy from ever seeing or hearing about snakes.

Back in the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church didn't want anyone outside the clergy to read the Bible, which is why they opposed the printing press. You'd think they'd want people to read it, but back then most people couldn't read, which allowed the Church to control the message and how it was interpreted. The printing press threatened that balance of power. I'm sure their motives were less than pure, but I bet Rome really believed they had to protect the untrained masses from reading some sort of mind-blowing passage they couldn't handle. Come to think of it, there's two or three snakes in the book, so maybe that was the issue.

The point is, they couldn't stop people from reading the Bible even if they had been right to try. And ultimately, the world is probably better off with the printing press, so maybe it's better to face these things head on instead of trying to hide from them. I admit it's a little insensitive, but there's going to be a drug-using skeleton story out there somewhere, and you can't depend on the world to protect you from it.

Yeah, it shouldn't be on the writer to predict every possible thing that could trigger a flashback or destructive behavior, because that's impossible. As I've said before, I have no problem warning for common and obvious triggers, like rape or suicide, partly because it's the nice thing to do, and partly to keep the Social Justice Warrior brigade from jumping all over me -- if you look back a couple of posts, you'll see my post about refusing to warn about pregnancy, and an flister of mine showed up and tried to lecture me about ~the ways of the world~ and how ~insensitive~ I am for for it.

But it becomes straight up obnoxious when people start equating things like pregnancy, snakes, insects, swearing, and "slimy things" to rape and suicide. I mean, am I just crazy or something, or can we agree that there are levels of badwrong, and rape is at a much higher level than a freaking cricket. I've been through some horrible abuse in my past, and it offends me that people try to compare anything even the least bit traumatizing to rape.
